Ban The Crates: Support a Legal Ban on Cruel Pig Confinement Practices in NSW

To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, The undersigned petitioners write to urge the NSW Parliament to ban the cruel use of sow stalls and farrowing crates in pig farming. These metal enclosures confine mother pigs so tightly that they cannot turn around or lie down comfortably. Kept in these conditions for weeks or even months, the animals suffer physically and psychologically. They often develop sores, weakened muscles, and abnormal behaviours such as bar-biting — signs of severe distress and frustration. Pigs are intelligent, social animals who, when given the chance, build nests, interact with their piglets, and move freely. Farrowing crates deny them all of this, reducing their lives to suffering and isolation at one of the most important times — motherhood. Many countries and producers have already moved away from these systems, proving that more humane alternatives are not only possible but practical. Continuing to allow sow stalls and farrowing crates in NSW puts us behind both public expectations and global standards of animal welfare. We respectfully ask the Legislative Assembly to introduce legislation to phase out and ultimately ban sow stalls and farrowing crates in NSW. Supporting farmers in this transition will help ensure a fair and sustainable change that reflects the values of compassion and decency. Let NSW be a leader in protecting animal welfare, not a place where cruelty is allowed to continue behind closed doors.
