Petition to Halt Sandy Creek Solar Farm and Review Cumulative Impacts on Central West Communities

To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, We, the undersigned residents and community members of the Central West of New South Wales, bring to the attention of the Legislative Assembly the following matters: Lightsource bp has proposed the Sandy Creek Solar Farm near Dunedoo and Elong Elong, covering approximately 1,700 hectares. This is one of several large-scale renewable energy developments proposed in close proximity, representing a significant cumulative land-use change across the region. The proposed development would occupy highly productive agricultural land and would reduce local food production and long-term sustainability. Neighbouring residents would experience direct and ongoing impacts, while land ownership is largely non-local. The scale of development will affect farming continuity, succession planning, and established agricultural practices. Infrastructure, including solar arrays, fencing, and battery storage, will increase fire risk and place additional pressure on local Rural Fire Service volunteers. Vegetation removal, soil disturbance, and construction activity will impact water resources, including groundwater relied upon by local landholders. The cumulative effect of multiple projects will place increasing pressure on infrastructure, insurance availability, community cohesion, and the rural character of the area. We, the undersigned, therefore ask the Legislative Assembly to call on the Government to pause the Sandy Creek Solar Farm, undertake an independent review of cumulative impacts, protect highly productive agricultural land, ensure meaningful community consultation, and prohibit the use of groundwater by large-scale energy developments.
