Fix the Great Western Highway

To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, The Petition of citizens and residents of New South Wales with an interest in transport across the Blue Mountains. Brings to the attention of the House that two centuries ago, convicts built the road connecting Sydney to the interior of NSW. In March 2026, a convict-built bridge has failed, severing that connection. The Blue Mountains crossing is yet to be a four-lane highway, while motorways to Sydney's north, south, and south-west have been four-lane divided roads for decades. A better road has been sought for sixty years, yet no NSW Government has adequately addressed it. Only the primarily single-lane each way Bell's Line of Road and suburban streets through Richmond and Windsor now reach the 63,000 km² Central West. Its 183,000 people— and the 20-25% of the state's population west of the Great Dividing Range — deserve better. We acknowledge the urgency of reopening the Great Western Highway at Victoria Pass. Equally urgent is delivering road infrastructure fit for the 21st century. The Sydney to Central West Corridors White Paper failed to address this need. Its only commitment is a 0-5 year initiative to "develop a preferred future corridor". Leaving heritage roads, repeatedly failing, threatening livelihoods, access to healthcare, education, and impeding economic drivers. The undersigned petitioners therefore ask the Legislative Assembly to request the Minister for Transport to immediately identify a bypass corridor at Blackheath, Mount Victoria and Victoria Pass, and expedite construction of a fit-for-purpose road through to Lithgow.
