Building Our Future: A Public High School for Green Square

To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, the community, the Green Square Primary School P&C and in collaboration with the Deputy Lord Mayor of Sydney, Jess Miller, wishes to draw the attention of the House that: • Green Square is one of Australia’s fastest-growing urban areas, with over 1,900 primary and 1,000 secondary-aged students in 2021. The population is expected to rise further as new developments include more apartments than planned. • Alexandria Park Community School enrolments are growing 5–7% per year, with the high school expected to reach capacity by 2027–2028. • Nearly 48% of families leave when children reach high school age, disrupting community stability. Local secondary education is essential for the long-term success of Green Square’s redevelopment. • Sending children to schools outside Green Square is unsustainable, increases traffic congestion, and conflicts with the City of Sydney’s environmental and transport policies. • Green Square sits in the “Innovation Corridor,” at the heart of Australia’s future economy. A high school here could be Innovation High, linking with Tech Central and UNSW. • A vertical STEM campus could be integrated with Green Square Library and Gunyama Park, making efficient use of space. • School planning is multi-year; starting now ensures readiness, and petitions show strong community commitment. The undersigned petitioners, therefore, ask the Legislative Assembly to call on the Government to: - Undertake feasibility research on building a new public high school in Green Square. - Commission and publish a report assessing the impact of increasing student numbers on surrounding local high schools.
