Save KU Kira Long Day Care Centre in Paddington

To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, •KU Kira is a long day care centre providing early childhood education and care for children from infancy (including under 1 yo) through to preschool age, supporting families with extended hours. •Operated by KU Children’s Services, the centre has been in continuous operation since 1991 (approximately 34 years) and is a trusted part of the Paddington community. •Located on a Sydney Water-owned site at Oatley Road / Moore Park Road, it serves families in an area with limited suitable childcare alternatives. •The service is approved for 56 places and meets the National Quality Standard. •Families have been informed that Sydney Water intends not to continue the current arrangement and proposes to dispose of the site. •Closure would remove critical long day care capacity, particularly for very young children, and significantly impact families’ ability to work and the local community. •Proper consultation and assessment of options to retain childcare at the site have not yet occurred. We therefore ask the Legislative Assembly to call on the NSW Government to: •Direct Sydney Water to pause any lease non-renewal, termination, or disposal process affecting the KU Kira site; •Require genuine consultation with families, KU Children’s Services, staff, the City of Sydney, and stakeholders before any final decision; •Preserve the site for continued childcare use wherever possible; and •If this is not maintained, ensure a like-for-like long day care replacement (including for children under 1 yo) is secured locally before any closure or disposal.
