Recognise and regulate Human Composting as a death care option

To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, We, the undersigned petitioners of New South Wales bring to your attention the urgent need to recognise Human Composting (also known as Natural Organic Reduction (NOR) or terramation) as a meaningful deathcare option alongside burial, cremation, natural burial and alkaline hydrolysis. Human Composting is a safe and environmentally responsible process that turns the body into soil. This soil can support new life through space-efficient living memorials such as trees, gardens or natural landscapes, while remaining compatible with all existing forms of memorialisation. It is currently permitted in 13 US states and Germany. Unlike existing options, Human Composting has the potential to be carbon neutral and sequester carbon dioxide, depending on how the soil is used. It offers a meaningful way for individuals to leave a living legacy of environmental regeneration. With land scarcity increasing, environmental targets tightening, and consumer values shifting, the public is seeking new options that are scalable, sustainable and reflective of modern needs. Human Composting is uniquely positioned to meet these challenges. Therefore, we ask the Legislative Assembly to request the NSW Government to: 1. Recognise Human Composting as a lawful method of body disposition in NSW; and 2. Develop appropriate regulations, in consultation with emerging providers, community advocacy groups and industry, to ensure Human Composting is delivered safely, ethically and transparently, regarding best practice standards, community trust, environmental integrity, diverse cultures and beliefs.
