Keyboard Shortcuts
Keyboard shortcuts (access keys) have been added to each page. Use these to bypass the default tab order or for quick access to site features. Note that browser support for access keys is growing, but is not universal. It is supported in Internet Explorer (IE) 5.5+, Netscape 6+, and Mozilla. Note that on IE, the access key only gives focus to the link element, so you will then need to hit the Enter key. In Netscape and Mozilla, the link is activated for you.
- Go to the Homepage - alt + 1 (PC) , control + 1 (Mac) - then hit Enter if using IE.
- Jump to site navigation (ie the links at the top of your current page) - alt + 2 (PC) , control + 2 (Mac)
- Jump to local navigation (ie the left column menu in your current page) - alt + 3 (PC) , control + 3 (Mac)
- Go to the (advanced) search page - alt + S (PC) , control + S (Mac) - then hit Enter if using IE.
- Selective Print - alt + p (PC) , control + P (Mac)
CSS, Resizable Text and Layout
You may disable the standard stylesheet if preferred. The layout of the HTML on each page has been designed such that the main content on the page always appears first, followed by site navigation, then navigation local to the site area you are in, and finally the search section.
Text and layout sizes have been specified using relative dimensions instead of fixed sizes. Tables have only been used to represent tabular data, and not for layout. Layout regions have been tested to ensure they will flex to a practical degree so as to accomodate enlarged text sizes, yet also work with smaller monitors using normal text settings.
Where practical, text has been used instead of graphics.
Tab Sequence
On pages other than the homepage, the main site navigation links found at the top of each page are bypassed in the initial tab sequence.
Tabbing starts from the breadcrumb trail immediately above the page heading, and continues through the main page content. After tabbing through the main content, the tab sequence loops back and follows through the side-wide navigation links.
PDF Files
Some content on this site is made available in PDF files, such as Bills and committee reports. To view these files, Acrobat Reader must be installed on your system. This is free from adobe. For pdf file accessibility options see adobe's acrobat accessibility page.
Calendars
This site makes special use of monthly "sitting day" calendars. these not only convey information about the days on which parliament sits, but also provide convenient access to the hansard and house paper records for those days. special provision has been made to ensure these calendars are accessible. see Calendar Help.
