Parliament House Sustainability Program
With the support of the NSW Climate Change Fund together with capital funding provided by the NSW Treasury, Parliament House has started a major project to reduce energy and water consumption by 25%.
Once this project is completed, it is estimated that Parliament House will reduce its annual electricity consumption by 2,358 megawatt-hours (MWh/y). This will result in reduced greenhouse gas emissions of 2,358 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO
2
) per year. This reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is the equivalent to permanently removing 611 cars off the road.
Parliament House will also reduce its annual potable water consumption by 17,860 kilolitres. This is the equivalent of each year saving seven Olympic size swimming pools of pure drinking water.
This project will cost $3.4 million. In addition to providing positive environmental outcomes, the reduction in energy and water consumption will mean reduced energy and water bills for Parliament House.
