Guide to Archives Collection - First Legislative Council, 1824 - 1856

This is a guide to the archives of the first Legislative Council of NSW. This Council was the first legislative body in Australia, lasting from its constitution in 1824 until the granting of responsible government in 1856 when it was succeeded by the present bicameral legislature.

The records have been physically rearranged many times in their history, and their original order has long been lost. This guide arranges them in an intellectual order which it is hoped will make them more readily accessible.

Where applicable, the Guide gives the series number ('PRS' denotes 'Parliamentary Record Series'), series title, date range, quantity, description of the records, and an item list.

Please note that most of the Manuscript Records which were tabled in the Council also were printed in the 'Votes and Proceedings of the Legislative Council', and are thus available in most State and University libraries in a much more convenient form.
