First Council Description of the Archives

1. The Manuscript Records
The Manuscript Records are comprised of the following series which are all kept together and which have been registered separately:
    • Tabled Papers
    • Papers Not Tabled (Miscellaneous Papers)
    • Bills
    • Committee Papers
    • Correspondence
(NOTE: The correspondence in the Manuscript Records is part of the various correspondence series described below.)

There are 83 boxes (about 14 shelf metres) of the Manuscript Records, for which there is an Inventory (a chronological list) ; and a Box List.
There is also a Register to the Tabled Papers for 1855 in the front of PRS 1.LA:1, Legislative Assembly, Register of Tabled Papers, 1856 - 1858


2. Correspondence and Other Office Records
PRS 19.LC1 Copies of Letters Sent by the Executive Council, 1829-1841
NOTE: These volumes are estrays from the archives of the Executive Council; they were apparently retained within the Legislature when the position of the Clerk of the Councils was separated. The continuation of this series is located in the NSW State Records as: Executive Council, Copies of Letters Sent, 1842-1859 (SRNSW Location 4/1678 - 4/1679)

4. Records relating to the Parliamentary Agent
In 1844 the Council presented an Address to the Governor (after passing a Resolution to this effect) requesting him place on the Estimates provision for the remuneration of a Parliamentary Agent in the United Kingdom at a rate of five hundred pounds a year. This Agent would be a Member of the House of Commons and would represent the Legislative Council and correspond with it or a Select Committee appointed for this purpose. The Honourable Francis Scott (1806-1884), M.P. for Roxburghshire 1841-47 and Berwickshire 1847-59, was appointed Parliamentary Agent and corresponded with the Council over three years.
