First Council Constitution - The NSW Act 1823
NSW Act 1823 (4 Geo IV. c96)
This Act of the British (Imperial) Parliament provided for a Supreme Court and Chief Justice for both NSW and Van Diemen's Land (later called Tasmania - which was then part of New South Wales as was the whole eastern seaboard of the Australian continent); a Legislative Council for NSW; and provided for a separate Legislative Council for Van Diemen's Land. There were also provisions relating to the transportation of convicts and other matters.
