Printed 'Parliamentary Papers' Relating to Aboriginal People

This page gives you a list of all the items in the Legislative Council's 'Consolidated Index' 1856 - 1954, which specifically relate to Aboriginal people.

The printed 'Parliamentary Papers', which comprise the 'Votes and Proceedings of the Legislative of Assembly', the 'Minutes of the Legislative Council' and all papers ordered to be printed, include many items relating to Aboriginal people. A complete list of these papers, extracted from the Legislative Council's 'Consolidated Index 1856 - 1954', follows below.

A report by the Protector of Aborigines respecting the number and condition of Aboriginal people first appears in the Assembly's 'Votes and Proceedings' in 1883. It comprises a table divided into district and sub-divided by Police Stations and shows the numbers and ages of Aborigines and half castes, details of employment, government assistance in particular fishing boats or blankets, what form of education children receive; alcohol use; medical arrangements problem; and any other information (Note: This is the language used in the Report). A census of Aboriginal people commenced in 1885 and is reproduced in the 'Votes and Proceedings' as an appendix to the annual reports of the Aboriginal Protection Board for most years until 1915.

The following table has been reproduced from information in the five volumes of the Legislative Council's 'Consolidated Index' (1856 - 1954). The number in the 'Reference' column is the page number of the very first volume for the Session: the 'Votes' volume for the Assembly; and the 'Minutes' volume for the Council. It is used to get the date when the item is mentioned in the House. The letter 'A' before the volume number in the 'Volume' column refers to the Assembly Volume of the 'Printed Papers'; the letter 'C' refers to the Council volume. After 1904, the two sets were consolidated into one set of Joint Volumes.
