ELECTIONS
From 1856 to 1934 Members of the Legislative Council were appointed with no limit on the number of Members. From 1934 to 1978 the Legislative Council had 60 Members elected for 12 years by a combined vote of the Legislative Council and the Legislative Assembly at joint sittings. From 1978 the Members of the Legislative Council were to be directly elected. From 1978 to 1991 there were 45 Members; and in 1991 the number was reduced (after a referendum at the 1991 General Elections) to 42.
