Function

Our Mission is to preserve valuable Parliamentary records as part of the archival resources of the State and make them accessible to present and future generations. To achieve this Mission the Parliamentary Archives has the following Objectives: We make arrangements for the intellectual control and physical storage of Parliamentary records; we help Members of Parliament manage their records; we help Parliamentary agencies manage records; we select valuable records for permanent preservation as archives; we store and preserve the archives in repositories; and we make the archives accessible to users to meet their needs.

The Section was established in 1991; the clients of the Parliamentary Archives Section being the Parliamentary Departments and Sections, Members of Parliament, and the general public in Australia and all over the world. Our business hours are from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm. An appointment is necessary for personal visitors (02 9230 2615).

Parliamentary Archives Policy

Because of the importance of the records, the Presiding Officers of Parliament have approved an 'Archives Policy' which commits the Parliament of NSW to preserve its archival heritage and places the archives in the care of a professionally qualified archivist, who is responsible to both the Clerk of the Legislative Assembly and the Clerk of the Parliaments.
