Holder of 27 former world swimming records. Admitted to Champions Hall of Fame 1988. Olympic torchbearer for the Sydney Olympic Games (2000) opening ceremony. Recreational interests include swimming and dogs.

Member of the British Empire (MBE) in 1967.

Married Gary Ware 1964 , and had issue, one daughter. Divorced 1968.
