Educated at Moree Superior public school; drove butcher's cart; shearer; joined Railways Department in 1922, foreman; left in 1926 to take up land on Camurra Boggabilla railway line, at Croppa Creek near Moree; successful wheat farmer; member of Wheatgrowers' Union which later became Wheat and Woolgrowers' Association, branch president; executive member of Farmers and Settlers Association; foundation member of premium Wheat Growers' Association, first Chairman; member of Aborigines Welfare Board from 1945 until 1950.

Son of David Heferen, farmer, and Ellen Edith Kate Olsen. Married (1) Mildred Mary Rootes on 6 December 1920 and had issue, 1 daughter and 1 son. Married (2) Mary Ann Barr on 14 October 1931 and had issue, 4 daughters and 1 son. Roman Catholic.
