Qualifications, occupations and interests

Pastoralist. Arrived in New South Wales with parents in 1855. Educated at Collector public and Goulburn High schools. Shop assistant at 15; then Clerk of Petty Sessions at Collector. Began dealing in cattle and horses in 1876; spent some time at Cooper's Creek, West Queensland. With brother, Col G.W. Waddell, took up successively Mileela, Wyuna and Wagamana, stations in western New South Wales; sold out in 1880s boom and settled in Sydney 1887. Later acquired new pastoral interests in far west. Owned Fort Bourke station with Sir Samuel McCaughey (q.v.), . later buying him out. Chairman Co-operative Wool and Produce Company and of Austral Malay Rubber Company Limited; first chairman McGarvie Smith Institute. Director of City Bank and of Qld Insurance Company. Commander Melbourne International Exhibition 1888. Member Farmers and Settlers' Association, and of Queensland Insurance Commander. Commander of the Melbourne International Exhibition in 1888. Member of the Farmers and Settlers' Association, and of the Australia Club. Prolific writer on public finance.


Personal

Youngest son of John Jackson Waddell and his wife Ann Mossman. Married on 7 May 1887 to Elizabeth James, daughter of John James, of Orange, and had issue 4 sons and 4 daughters. Presbyterian.
