Served in Australian Imperial Forces from 1914 until 1919, 10th and 48th Battalions, lieutenant, Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM); Military Cross (MC); Australian Military Forces (AMF), Captain in 1924; served in 2nd Australian Imperial Forces from 1940 until 1944, 13th Battalion. Transferred to Armoured Corps, East Command in 1941. Major commanding 43rd Australian Water Transport Landing Craft, Royal Australian Engineers, New Guinea, Major.
Son of George Deane Mitchell, railway porter, and Annie Smith. Married Thelma Bell on 30 July 1941 and had issue, 1 son. Funeral at Northern Suburbs crematorium from St Michael's Church of England, Vaucluse.
