Farmer. Educated at Sparks Creek public school and worked on father's farm. Purchased a farm near Hawkesbury Agricultural College. Sold to return to Sparks Creek and spent time between his farm and Mosman residence. Keen sportsman, played cricket for the Northern Districts, also tennis and rifle shooting; author.

Son of John Ashford, selector, and his wife Rebecca Bell. Married Lily Charlotte Keys Brecht c.1904 at Scone and had issue, 4 sons. Church of England.
