Educated by Christian Brothers in Ireland; as youth sent out to join uncle in Melbourne., who died soon afterwards; moved to New Zealand and to Sydney c.1884; assisted road superintendent in Orange and Lithgow districts; joined Lithgow Mercury in 1886, managing editor 1889 - 1926, retired; foundation member of New South Wales Country Press Association 1900, president 1909 - 1910; committee member of Australasian Provincial Press Association; chairman of directors of New South Wales Country Press Co-operative Company of Australia Limited 1932 - 1940; member of Country Printing Trades Wages Board; president of Lithgow School of Arts for 25 years; director of Lithgow Hospital Board.


Personal

Son of Patrick Ryan, farmer, and Alice Ryan. Married Margaret Redmond, schoolteacher, and had issue, 1 daughter and 2 sons. Roman Catholic. Funeral at South Head cemetery from St Mary's Roman Catholic cathedral.
