Qualifications, occupations and interests
Miner and union official. Educated at the Marist Brothers, North Sydney; bursary holder; at eighteen years of age commenced work as a miner at Yerranderie, suffer of phthisis; active unionist, secretary and organiser of the Amalgamated Miners' Association, representative on wage board; joined Universal Service League in 1915
Military Service
Served in Australian Infantry Forces from 1915 until 1916, 17th and 16th Battalions, shellshocked and invalided home, Lance Corporal
Personal
Son of James Fern, gardener, and Elizabeth McIvor, Scottish migrants. Married Ruby May Sorman in 1904 and had issue, 4 daughters. Funeral at Waverley cemetery from St Mary's Roman Catholic Cathedral.
