Pastoralist. Left school at 16 and worked on a farm, in a counting house and in a bank. Joined pastoralist brothers near Melbourne in 1841. Had cattle runs in Queensland in early 1850s. Went to gold diggings as a journalist. First Chairman of Directors of Commercial Bank, Melbourne in 1866. First president of Riverine Association. Managed agriculture and stock department of international exhibition of Sydney in 1879.
Son of Andrew Lang, factory owner. Married Elizabeth Jane Cape in July 1854 and had issue, 1 daughter and 3 sons.
