Qualifications, occupations and interests
Pastoralist, politician and businessman. In 1808 returned to England by way of China and the Phillipines, trading sandalwood unsuccessfully for his uncle. Arrived in England in 1810.
Son of James Macarthur, elder brother of John Macarthur. Married Maria King in 1812 and had issue 6 daughters and 5 sons. His daughter Catherine Macarthur married Patrick Leslie, also a Member of the Legislative Assembly; his daughter Emmeline Macarthur married Patrick Leslie's brother, George Farquhar Leslie, who was also a Member of the first Legislative Council.
