Lawyer (solicitor). Educated at St Clement's School in Yass and Fort Street Public School, Sydney. Articled as a solicitor to A. Ashdown; admitted as a solicitor in 1890; senior partner in Berne and Shipway, solicitors. Honorary secretary of New South Wales Anniversary Regatta Committee for 5 years. Freemason.
Joined New South Wales Infantry Regiment as a bugler in 1879; served in Soudan with New South Wales contingent in 1885
Son of Joshua Shipway, described as a tailor, miner and gentleman and Mary Downey. Married Mabel Adeline Bull on 15 September 1897 at Liverpool, New South Wales and had issue, 1 daughter and 3 sons. Church of England.
