Qualifications, occupations and interests
Miner and union official. Journeyed to Mexico with father as a young child and then worked in Cornish mines. Largely self educated. Arrived in Australia probabl;y in 1880s; worked in mines in the Broken Hill and Silverton districts. Employed in Broken Hill as a mining captain. Executive of Amalgamated Miners Association in 1891. President of Broken Hill Branch in 1892; Led union strike in 1892. Wesleyan circuit steward and local preacher. Visited England in 1911 as a member of a parliamentary delegation. After retirement from politics worked for the British Empire League.

Member of the Parliament of the Commonwealth of Australia. Member of the House of Representatives for Barrier 1901 - 1917. Senator 1917 - 1923.
Personal
Son of Josiah Thomas, miner and his wife Anne Rablin. Married (1) Henrietta Lee Ingleby on 27 July 1889 at Broken Hill, in a Wesleyan service, and had issue, 1 daughter and 2 sons. Married (2) Clara Ingleby (his first wifes sister) on 20 February 1909 at Stowe Memorial Church in Adelaide and had issue, 1 son. Methodist. Burial in Methodist section of Rookwood cemetery.
