Assisted in the formation of the Protective League of Australian Industry 1857.


Qualifications, occupations and interests

Soap and candle manufacturer. Established a soap and candle works in Sydney. By 1847, the works were the fourth largest in Sydney, producing 70 tons of soap a year. By 1865, the soap factory employed seven and produced 300 tons a year. The candle factory employed 11 and produced 150 tons a year. The candles were exported to New Zealand.


Personal

Son of William, a farmer, and his wife Mary Bell. Married Ruth Johnston (born Sayers) in 1835 and they had 1 daughter and 3 sons. Assisted immigrants, they arrived in Sydney on the 'Brothers' on 11 March 1841. His son, William Johnston Bell, was also a Member of Parliament.
