Landed proprieter. Born of a well-to-do family. Owned Eastwood Estate from c.1863. Hunting and racing enthusiast who built a racecourse at Eastwood. Master of Sydney Hunt Club and for a time of the Northern Hunting Club; Member of Australian Jockey Club and Sydney Turf Club. Brother of S.H Terry.

Alderman at Ryde from 1871. Mayor from 1871 until 1873, 1875 until 1876, 1899.

Son of John Terry, landowner and Eleanor Rouse. Married Isabel Benson of Tasmania and had issue, 13 children. Church of England.
