Community Activity

Commissioned as a Justice of the Peace in 1885. Director of Sydney Hospital from 1878 to 1899. Member of the Aborigines Protection Board from 1887 to 1899.


Qualifications, occupations and interests

Pastoralist. Educated in W.T Cape's school in Darlinghurst, Sydney. Obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1859 from University of Sydney. Articled to a solicitor for some years but appears not to have been admitted to practice. Property owner and businessman when he entered Parliament. Held and managed pastoral runs in Northern New South Wales and Queensland which were sold in 1875. Returned to Sydney where he attended to his family's real estate empire and was director of several companies.


Local Government Activity

Alderman of the Sydney City Council for Macquarie Ward, 1 December 1883 - 20 November 1898. Mayor 1890 - 1891.


Personal

Son of Thomas Burdekin, merchant, and his wife Mary Ann Bossley. Father died in 1844 leaving a large fortune. Married Catherine Byrne, daughter of Keyran Byrne, a farmer of Attunga, on 24 January 1872 and had issue, 8 children. Church of England. His brother, Marshall Burdekin, was also a Member of the Legislative Assembly.
