Qualifications, occupations and interests

Farmer and grazier. Arrived in New South Wales in c.1835. His father purchased 1280 acres, known as 'Omega Retreat', between Kiama and Gerringong and became a farmer and grazier. Educated at the Normal Institution, Hyde Park, Sydney. Went to sea in 1849 and to Bendigo during the gold rushes. Returned to Kiama and settled down as a farmer and grazier at Bendella. Leased 3,950 acres in the Camden District in 1860. In the early 1860's took up land on the Tweed River where a large block was cleared and improved. Later returned to family properties near Kiama. Acquired business interests in Sydney and lived there until his death.


Personal

Son of James Mackey Gray and Sarah Anna Burton. Married Mary Bray on 14 March 1862 at Campbelltown and had issue, 5 daughters and 2 sons. Church of England. Buried in the Gerringong Cemetery.
