Born in Malta. Migrated to Australia in 1956. Married to Anne (deceased). 2 sons (Bede and Jeremy) and 1 daughter (Bridget). Married to Ann, 13 May 2006.

B.A., Dip.Ed.(Syd.) 1971. High school History/English teacher for 10 years prior to entering Parliament.
