Educated at St Ignatius' College., Riverview and the University of Sydney., BA in 1900, LL.B in 1902; called to the Bar in 1902, practised on the Western Circuit; associate to Justice R.E O'Connor and law reporter to High Court of Australia in Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, and Tasmania from 1904 until 1905, resumed practice at Bar, established a reputation in common law and Admiralty jurisdictions; deputy Judge of Land and Valuation Court in 1929; chairman of directors of Mutual Life and Citizens Assurance Company Limited from 1945 until 1961; chairman of Union Trustee Company of Australia; director of Sydney Board of Commercial Union Assurance Company Limited; fellow of Senate of University of Sydney from 1934 until 1948; author in 1952; Australia Club

King's Counsel in 1929, Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE) in 1939


Personal

Son of Sir William Patrick Manning, accountant, financier and Member of the Legislative Assembly, and Honora Torphy. Married Nora Antonia Martin in 1904 and had issue, 2 daughters. Roman Catholic. Funeral at Northern Suburbs lawn cemetery from St Mary's Roman Catholic cathedral.
