REDFERN RAILWAY STATION SAFETY

The Hon. HELEN SHAM-HO: I refer the Attorney General, representing the Minister for Police, to numerous recent reports in the media of people being assaulted and robbed at or near Redfern railway station. Does the Minister agree that the Government has the responsibility to ensure citizens’ safety in public places? What measures has the Minister taken or will he take to address law and order issues in the area surrounding Redfern railway station?

The Hon. J. W. SHAW: When I attended the University of Sydney in 1968 law and order was a problem around Redfern railway station. It is a longstanding problem. I am sure that our most competent police Minister, the Hon. Paul Whelan, and Commissioner of Police, Peter Ryan, have the matter in hand. I would be happy to refer that question to the Minister and obtain further details for the Hon. Helen Sham-Ho.
