QUESTIONS WITHOUT NOTICE
WORKPLACE INJURY MANAGEMENT AND WORKERS COMPENSATION ACT
The Hon. M. J. GALLACHER:
My question without notice is to the Attorney General, and Minister for Industrial Relations. Why has the Attorney not proclaimed section 189 of the Workplace Injury Management and Workers Compensation Act relating to insurance brokers, despite its having been passed by Parliament nine months ago?
The Hon. J. W. SHAW:
There is some controversy about this provision and the employers tend to oppose it, so I have tried to be conciliatory and have attempted to engage in a consultation process. I will be guided by the Workers Compensation Advisory Council about this matter. If, in due course, it is
decided to proclaim it, we will. But as honourable members know from the regular tabling of unproclaimed legislation, there is nothing particularly unusual about the procedural course taken in respect of this measure.
