BusinessQuestions Without Notice

The Hon. Dr B. P. V. PEZZUTTI: My question without notice is addressed to the Attorney General, and Minister for Industrial Relations, in his capacity representing the Minister for Local Government. Is the Minister aware that the recent drowning of a 2½-year-old child in the family's backyard swimming pool at Jilliby occurred despite the existence of a Wyong Council approved, but obviously inadequate, pool fence? Can the Minister ensure that this matter will be thoroughly investigated and adequate safety standards put into place to guard against such unsuitable pool fences being erected and approved by local councils?

The Hon. J. W. SHAW: The honourable member will know that when I was shadow minister for local government I took an active interest in the question of pool fencing, as did the honourable member. It is an issue of genuine concern with me. I took the opportunity during that period to consult medical specialists concerned with child health and welfare and so on. It is an issue I am happy to take up with the Minister for Local Government for his consideration. I undertake to do so.
