LEADER AND DEPUTY LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION

The Hon. J. P. HANNAFORD, by leave: I desire to inform the House that on 11 April 1995 I was elected Leader of the Liberal Party and Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council. On 6 April 1995 the Hon. Richard Thomas Marshall Bull was elected Leader of the National Party and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council. Also, I inform the House that on 1 May 1995 the Hon. James Miltiadis Samios was elected Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party.

The Hon. M. R. EGAN: On my own behalf and on behalf of the Government I offer my congratulations to the Hon. J. P. Hannaford, the Hon. R. T. M. Bull and the Hon. J. M. Samios on their election respectively as Leader of the Opposition, Deputy Leader of the Opposition and Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party. After only a few weeks in office as a Minister, I am already envious of the position held by the Leader of the Opposition. I am sure he will find his position very enjoyable.

The Hon. J. P. Hannaford: I will swap with you.

The Hon. M. R. EGAN: I do not intend to swap. Ian Armstrong tells me that after three months I will start to enjoy this job, and I will take his word for that. Though the Leader of the Opposition and his two colleagues might prefer to be on this side of the House, they will find their new roles not only important but enjoyable. I hope to extend to them the same courtesies extended to me - and for which I am very grateful - when I was in Opposition. I hope that in this Parliament we can have an excellent working relationship, but that politically we do battle with one another, as is expected by our constituents.
