NARDY HOUSE RESPITE CARE FACILITY

Mr ANDREW CONSTANCE: My question without notice is addressed to the Premier. Why did the Government build Nardy House when it was not going to fund essential staffing positions to provide respite and permanent care for young people with disabilities?

Mr BOB CARR: The Minister for Disability Services has a very strong reply on this matter. I will ensure that his information is shared with this House in detail.

Mr John Brogden: What do you have to say about it?

Mr BOB CARR: I will tell you.

Mr SPEAKER: Order! The Leader of the Opposition will stop calling out.

Mr BOB CARR: Nardy House would have required an annual subsidy of $600,000 because of its location. It was remotely located well away from any significant populations of disabled people. The Government would have had to take $600,000 a year from its Disability Services budget to subsidise its location. Given the wide and diverse needs in the disability community, there are better ways that money can be spent to help people with disabilities and their families.

Mr ANDREW CONSTANCE: I ask a supplementary question. In light of the Premier's answer, why did former Minister Faye Lo Po' announce on local radio that recurrent funding would be provided when the Government had no intention of honouring that commitment?

Mr SPEAKER: Order! That is not a supplementary question.
