Wireless internet such as WiMAX or Wi-Fi should be used to extend the reach of wired internet in rural areas because of the better bang for the buck. I used to live in Orange NSW for 2 years (7/2005-1/2008) and the ADSL only reached 6km from the telephone exchange. The rest only had dialup or had to use wireless internet from such companies as Cirrus Communications. Telstra did very little to enhance CDMA or mobile phone towers to increase access to mobile internet in the Central West of NSW. I wrote repeatedly to Central Western Daily re wireless internet from 2005-2007: www.wwwalker.com.au/press/
