2 MINES RESCUE BILL
    The President reported the following Message from the Legislative Assembly:

    Mr PRESIDENT

    The Legislative Assembly having this day passed a Bill intituled "An Act to provide for mines rescue services and facilities; to constitute the Mines Rescue Board; and to repeal the Mines Rescue Act 1925" presents the same to the Legislative Council for its concurrence.

3 PAPER

    The President, in accordance with section 78 (1) of the Independent Commission Against Corruption Act 1988, tabled the Report of the Independent Commission Against Corruption on Investigation into the Relationship Between Police and Criminals—Second Report, dated April 1994, received by him today.

4 PETITIONS

    Repeal of Homosexual Vilification Legislation

    Revd Mr Nile presented a petition from 233 citizens of New South Wales expressing concern that the new homosexual vilification amendment to the Anti-Discrimination Act censors criticism and statements concerning homosexuals, and praying that the House repeal the legislation.

    Petition received.

6 MINISTERIAL STATEMENT—APPOINTMENT OF PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY

    Mr Hannaford informed the House that on Monday 11 April 1994, the Honourable Edward Phillip Pickering was appointed as Parliamentary Secretary assisting the Premier and Minister for Economic Development.

8 CRIMES LEGISLATION (UNSWORN EVIDENCE) AMENDMENT BILL

    Mr Hannaford moved, pursuant to Notice: That leave be given to bring in a Bill for an Act to abolish the right of an accused person to give unsworn evidence or to make unsworn statements in criminal proceedings and to make consequential amendments to the Crimes Act 1900 and the Mental Health (Criminal Procedure) Act 1990.

    Question put and passed.

    Ordered: That the Bill be printed.

    Mr Hannaford then moved, pursuant to Sessional Order: That this Bill be now read a second time.
