Tobacco Smoking in New South Wales (Inquiry)

This inquiry is a completed Parliamentary inquiry conducted by the Tobacco Smoking Committee.

This Committee was established by resolution of the Legislative Council on 28 February 2006 and the Legislative Assembly on 8 March 2006 to inquire into and report on tobacco smoking in New South Wales. In accordance with these resolutions, the Committee's first meeting took place on 9 March 2006.

Following prorogation of the Parliament on 19 May 2006, the Committee was re-established by resolution of the Legislative Council on 24 May 2006 and the Legislative Assembly on 25 May 2006. As part of these resolutions, the inquiry reporting date was extended to 30 June 2006.

Inquiry Terms of Reference

Resolution passed 28 February 2006, Legislative Council Minutes No. 135, Item 42, p 1843 and Resolution passed 8 March 2006, Legislative Assembly Votes and Procedings No. 168, Item 3, p 1890

1. That a Joint Select Committee be appointed to inquire into and report on tobacco smoking in New South Wales, and in particular:

(a) the costs and other impacts of smoking,
(b) the effectiveness of strategies to reduce tobacco use,
(c) the effects of smoke-free indoor venues on the initiation and maintenance of the smoking habit,
(d) factors affecting initiatives for smoke-free indoor areas,
(e) the effectiveness of media, educative, community and medically-based Quit initiatives,
(f) the adequacy of the budget for smoking control initiatives, and
(g) the Smoke-free Environment Amendment (Motor Vehicle Prohibition) Bill 2005 introduced by Revd Mr Nile in the Legislative Council.

2. That the committee report by 30 June 2006.
