Cause Category: Ministerial by-election
Notes: There were two vacancies filled with this by-election, though there were different reasons for the vacancies. John Black resigned on acceptance of office in the newly formed Forster ministry. Charles Cowper resigned (27 Oct) for other reasons. He published an explanation suggesting health and family reasons after many years of work for the colony, SMH 28 October, p.3 col.4. He was nominated while not present, but after the election declined to accept his election and resigned, see Cowper's letter SMH 14 November, p.1 col.7.
